Pastoral Pearls: Make a difference ...

Posted by MaryPat Potts on

The fourth Saturday of October is Make a Difference Day. According to this quote, even I can make a difference to someone. I don’t know, though. It takes guts to reach out, to step forward, to offer a “spirit lift.” How can I do that? Sometimes that attitude can stop me before I even get started. I guess you’d say that’s the easy way out. But the good Lord blessed me as much as anyone with His wisdom – when I ask for it – with creativity and with the ability to pay attention to what matters. It’s up to me to act on what the Good Lord provides – if I have the courage to do so.

Jane Goodall sets forth a challenge worthy of those of us who try to act on God’s call to love our neighbors. She says,

What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.”

So, since anything I do makes some kind of a difference, it might as well be the kind that lifts someone up – even as simple as a kind word, a ready smile, a compassionate ear to listen to someone’s story, a moment taken to pay attention to how someone is feeling ... These are things even I can do. And who needs a Make a Difference Day to make a difference in someone’s life?

Loving God,

Fill my heart with courage to reach out to the people around me,

to lift them up and show them the love you bestow upon us to share.

Thank you for all the love you constantly shower upon me in my life.

Let your love for me bubble over to make a real difference in someone’s life today,

and tomorrow, and the next day, and so on,

following your wonderful example of how to do this.

May you Bless someone else through me today.  Amen.
