Pastoral Pearls: Gratitude turns what we have into enough

Posted by MaryPat Potts on

"Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity...it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." —Melody Beattie

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and once I get past the bustling around my mind and heart goes to all those things for which I am thankful. It’s easy to think of the obvious – health, happiness, food, shelter, family… but I often challenge myself to go beyond – make the list longer – strain my brain a bit. When I do that it becomes a “Gratitude Conversation” that changes my outlook on everything! I once heard something like, “There is never room for negative thoughts or feelings when we are voicing our gratitude.” TRY it! It’s true! My heart gets lighter; I feel like reaching out and doing something to also lift someone else’s spirits; I can see God in action more clearly – not only in what I have been thankful for, but also as I look around me and look forward.

Happy Turkey Day! May you play with making a Gratitude list so long that you can’t help laughing and singing and bubbling over! God is in the Gratitude; what a fun place to meet him.

Loving God, I am so incredibly thankful for all the blessings

you shower on me -great and however tiny.

May I always pay attention to notice all the ways you

bless me and my life, and give you thanks.

Send your Holy Spirit to inspire me to write down

and say aloud LONG lists of things I am grateful to you for,

and feel the way you transform me and my life

and the world through gratitude.

May I meet you frequently in the Gratitude. Amen.
