Pastoral Pearls: Giving as a way of receiving ...

Posted by MaryPat Potts on

“There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life -- happiness, freedom, and peace of mind -- are always attained by giving them to someone else.” ~Peyton C. March

What a wonderful reminder this quote is! At this time of celebrating our freedom – our independence – this quote reminds us of how freedom can actually be inter-dependence. Understandably we so often see freedom as something we fight for, but even as Jesus  was counter-cultural, what would happen if we would instead see freedom as something we give away to benefit someone else? How do I feel when I focus all my efforts into trying to be free of someone else’s control? Or focus on my rights and how I need to fight for them? These bring up feelings of frustration and anxiety and anger for me.

Then… How do I feel when I free a butterfly? Or give a child the freedom to explore or make mistakes? Or help someone free themselves from limiting beliefs or lack of self-esteem?  I remember feeling happy, at peace…  Which would you choose?

Loving God,

Guide me past any knee-jerk reactions

to fight for the freedoms I may want.

Lead me to the freedom of giving away

what I might most want.

“It is in giving that we receive,” says St. Francis.

That is a freedom I want to experience.

Give me the presence of mind

the pause – to choose giving

away happiness, peace,

and even freedom,

rather than fighting for these things.

Let Freedom Ring!
