Pastoral Pearls: Be Kind to Humankind Week

Posted by MaryPat Potts on

Last week of August = BE KIND TO HUMANKIND WEEK

Be Kind To Humankind Week was founded Lorraine Jara who was inspired by a sad story of two men involved in a boating accident from her hometown. The two men clung to life while other boaters passed them by because they didn’t want to get involved. One of the men eventually died. To me that is so senseless and cowardly (though human) to just see a need and not respond. It echoes the Good Samaritan story that also reminds us to ACT when we see a need. Lorraine decided to honor the memory of the deceased young man by creating a week to encourage kindness among people. What can WE do? Here is Lorraine’s prescribed regiment for Be Kind to Humans Week:

Sacrifice Our Wants For Others’ Needs Sunday

  • Motorist Consideration Monday
  • Touch-A-Heart Tuesday
  • Willing-To-Lend-A-Hand Wednesday
  • Thoughtful Thursday
  • Forgive-Your-Foe Friday
  • Speak-Nice-Words Saturday

Spread the word about Be Kind To Humankind Week by organizing events for your community. Share your own experiences with kindness. Use #BeKindToHumankind or #BK2HK in social media.

What would happen is we all tried to do these things in whatever way works for us? Let’s find out!

Loving God, you taught me to never look the other way when I see a fellow human in need.

Please open the eyes of my heart to SEE the needs around me, and open my heart to move me into ACTION on behalf of your great love.

May I follow your example of ACTIVE love.

May I avoid the temptation to NOT see a need, so I don’t have to respond to it.

Give me the strength and courage to ACT on behalf of your love, opening my heart to see and do all the multitude of things in my power to do to make life better for those around me.

~ Amen
