From Father Joe: What is the Church Model 3

Posted by General Announcements on

The Dulles Sacramental Model of the Church, created by theologian Avery Dulles, identifies the Church as a sacrament or sign of God's presence in the world. The model emphasizes the Church's role in mediating God's grace and providing a visible expression of the spiritual reality of the Christian faith.

The model identifies six aspects of the Church's sacramental nature, each with its own unique characteristics and contributions:

  1. The Church as a sacrament of salvation: The Church is a visible sign of God's saving presence in the world and a means of communicating God's grace to people.

  2. The Church as a community of disciples: The Church is a community of believers who gather to worship, learn, and support each other in their spiritual journeys.

  3. The Church as a mystical communion: The Church is a spiritual reality that unites believers across time and space, connecting them to Christ and each other in a profound way.

  4. The Church as a herald of the Word: The Church proclaims the Gospel message and communicates God's Word to   the world.

  5. The Church as a servant: The Church serves the needs of people, particularly the poor and marginalized, and works to promote justice and peace in the world.

  6. The Church as a sacrament of unity: The Church is a visible  sign of the unity of God's people, working to build bridges between individuals and communities and promote harmony and cooperation.

Strengths of Dulles' Sacramental Model of the Church:

  • Emphasizes the visible nature of the Church: Dulles' model highlights the physical and visible presence of the Church in the world. This is an important aspect of the Church that helps people to experience the grace of God through the sacraments and the community of believers.

  • Focuses on the sacraments: The model highlights the importance of the sacraments as a means of experiencing the grace of God. This focus on the sacraments helps to keep the Church centered on its mission and purpose.

  • Promotes a sense of community: The model emphasizes the importance of the Church as a community of believers. This sense of community helps to build a sense of belonging and support for members of the Church.

  • Acknowledges the Church's institutional nature: The model acknowledges the hierarchical structure of the Church and the important role played by ordained ministers. This institutional dimension helps to promote unity and order within the Church.

Weaknesses of Dulles' Sacramental Model of the Church:

  • Overemphasizes the physical nature of the Church: The model's focus on the physical  and visible aspects of the Church may lead to a neglect of the spiritual and invisible aspects of the Church.

  • Lacks a focus on evangelization: The model's emphasis on the sacraments and community may neglect the importance of evangelization and spreading the message of the Gospel to those who have not yet heard it.

Next Sunday we will discuss Cardinal Dulles’ 4th model of the Church, “The Herald Model.”

In Christ,

Fr. Joe Connelly
