Howard Thurman was an author, scholar, civil rights activist, pastor – and a force of nature that many have never heard of. His relationships with Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and other contemporaries changed the course of the Civil Rights movement. To Thurman, the nonviolent witness of Jesus was the foundation of all social change. In his book Footprints of A Dream, he writes:
“The movement of the Spirit of God in the hearts of men and women often calls them to act against the spirit of their times or causes them to anticipate a spirit which is yet in the making. In a moment of dedication they are given wisdom and courage to dare a deed that challenges and to kindle a hope that inspires.”
This week, I invite you to Google around a bit and check out the life and witness of this faithful man. What bit of hope might his life kindle in you?
