Upcoming Memorial: Saint Louis of France on Monday, August 25

Posted by Father Joe Connelly on

This Monday, the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Louis IX of France (1214–1270). Though he wore a crown, Saint Louis is remembered above all as a man who sought to live as a faithful disciple of Christ.

Louis became king at the age of twelve, but his reign was marked less by power and prestige than by his concern for justice, mercy, and faith. He was deeply devoted to prayer, attended daily Mass, and kept a strict rule of life, fasting and doing penance regularly. He ruled with fairness, personally hearing cases from the poor and seeking to root out corruption. It was said that “his word was his bond” and that he valued truthfulness above political advantage.

Saint Louis was also known for his generosity and care for the needy. He opened hospitals, invited the hungry to his table, and even washed the feet of beggars. He fostered learning and supported the building of churches and monasteries throughout France. His greatest architectural legacy, the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, was constructed to house the precious relics of the Passion, including what was believed to be the Crown of Thorns.

In his personal life, Louis was devoted to his wife, Margaret of Provence, and together they raised eleven children. He worked hard to instill in them the virtues of faith, justice, and humility. He was also active in the defense of the faith, taking part in two Crusades. During the last of these, he fell ill and died in Tunis in 1270. Canonized just 27 years later by Pope Boniface VIII, Saint Louis remains the only king of France to be declared a saint.

His life is a reminder that holiness is possible in every state of life—even in positions of great responsibility and authority. As we prepare to celebrate his memorial this Monday, may his example inspire us to live faithfully in our own vocations, leading others closer to Christ through justice, charity, and humility.

Saint Louis of France, pray for us!

In Christ,

Fr. Joe Connelly
