Pastoral Statement from Fr. Joe Connelly
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
With a heavy heart, I write to you today in light of the terrible tragedy that occurred this morning at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, where lives were violently taken during the celebration of Mass. Two children have died, and many others were injured. Words cannot fully capture the sorrow and anguish of such an attack upon innocent lives, especially in a sacred space where Christ Himself is present.
Our first response must be prayer. I ask all parishioners of Guardian Angels to unite in prayer for the children who have died, for the injured, and for their families and loved ones who are now bearing unbearable grief. Let us also pray for the Annunciation parish and school, that they may experience God’s comfort and healing presence amid this darkness.
This act of violence reminds us of the fragility of life and the urgent need for Christ’s peace in our world. When confronted with evil, we may be tempted to despair, yet our faith assures us that the light of Christ shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it (John 1:5). As Christians, we are called to remain steadfast in hope, to console the afflicted, and to work for a society where every human life is cherished and protected.
As a parish, we will:
- Offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass this weekend for the repose of the souls of the children who have died and for all the victims.
- Include a special time of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament this coming Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. for healing, peace, and protection.
- Stand ready to support anyone among us who is struggling with fear, grief, or confusion in light of these events. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me personally.
May Our Lady, Queen of Peace, intercede for the families, for the parish of Annunciation, and for our world so wounded by violence. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus bring comfort and mercy to all who mourn.
In Christ’s peace,
Fr. Joe Connelly
