Honoring the Fallen: A Catholic Reflection for Memorial Day

Posted by Father Joe Connelly on

This Monday, our nation pauses to observe Memorial Day—a time to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. As Catholics, we recognize in their sacrifice a profound witness to the words of Our Lord: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

While Memorial Day is often marked by family gatherings, parades, and the unofficial start of summer, its true purpose is deeply solemn. It is a day of remembrance, a day to pray for the souls of those who died defending the freedoms we enjoy, and a day to renew our commitment to peace, justice, and the common good.

You are invited to join us at Guardian Angels for a special Memorial Day Mass on Monday, May 26 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a blessing of the cemetery. This is a meaningful opportunity to pray together for those who died in service to our country and to commend their souls to the mercy of God.

As we reflect on the true meaning of this day, consider also praying a Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet for the faithful departed. If you visit a cemetery and pray for the dead, you may also receive a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions.

May God, the Lord of nations and the Prince of Peace, bless our country, bring comfort to those who mourn, and grant eternal rest to the fallen.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

In Christ,

Fr. Joe Connelly
