Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels
September 29
On September 29, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Archangels: Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. These powerful messengers of God appear throughout Scripture, each entrusted with a unique role in God’s plan of salvation.
Saint Michael the Archangel
Michael is known as the great defender of God’s people. In the Book of Revelation, he leads the heavenly hosts in battle against Satan and the fallen angels, casting them out of heaven (Revelation 12:7–9). Christians often invoke Saint Michael for protection against evil, praying that he defend us in the spiritual battle we face each day.
Saint Gabriel the Archangel
Gabriel is God’s messenger, entrusted with delivering news of great joy. He appeared to Zechariah to announce the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:11–20) and to Mary to announce the coming of Christ (Luke 1:26–38). Through Gabriel, we see how God draws near to His people with mercy and hope, inviting our trust in His promises.
Saint Raphael the Archangel
Raphael’s mission is one of healing. In the Book of Tobit, he journeys with Tobias, protecting him along the way and restoring the sight of Tobias’ father, Tobit (Tobit 12:15). His name means “God heals,” reminding us that the Lord sends His grace to heal our wounds of body, mind, and spirit.
Why We Celebrate
The archangels show us God’s care for His people in different ways—through protection, communication, and healing. Though unseen, they remain active in the life of the Church, interceding for us before the throne of God. On this feast, we give thanks for their presence and ask for their guidance as we strive to follow Christ.
Saint Michael, defend us.
Saint Gabriel, bring us God’s word.
Saint Raphael, heal and guide us.
In Christ,
Fr. Joe Connelly
