What Is Wisdom?
We live in an age overflowing with information. With a few taps on a phone, we can learn almost anything. We have access to more knowledge than any generation in history. Yet for all our knowledge, we often seem to lack wisdom.
The Scriptures speak often of wisdom, but they mean something far greater than intelligence or education. Wisdom is not simply knowing many facts. Nor is it the cleverness that enables someone to solve difficult problems. A person may possess great intelligence and still make foolish decisions. Another may have little formal education yet possess profound wisdom.
In the Bible, wisdom begins with God. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10). This "fear" is not terror but reverence—a recognition that God is God and we are His creatures. Wisdom begins when we stop trying to make ourselves the measure of all things and instead allow God to be the measure of our thoughts, our decisions, and our lives.
St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that wisdom is the virtue by which we judge all things according to their highest cause, which is God Himself. A wise person sees the world through God's eyes. He does not merely ask, "What do I want?" but "What does God desire?" He does not ask only, "Will this make me happy today?" but "Will this lead me to eternal life?"
St. Augustine offers another beautiful insight. He understood wisdom as the right ordering of our loves. Every person loves something—family, work, success, comfort, possessions, reputation. These are good gifts, but they become dangerous when they occupy the place that belongs to God alone. Wisdom consists in loving God above all things and then loving everything else in Him and for Him. When our loves are rightly ordered, our lives become rightly ordered.
The saints are living examples of this wisdom. They were not all scholars or theologians. Some were kings, others were peasants. Some founded religious orders, while others quietly lived hidden lives of prayer and charity. What united them was not extraordinary intelligence but the ability to recognize what truly mattered. They understood that every earthly success fades, while friendship with Christ endures forever.
Our culture often prizes efficiency, productivity, and achievement. These are valuable in their proper place, but they are not the measure of a successful life. A person can gain wealth, recognition, and influence yet fail to become wise. Jesus asks, "What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?" Wisdom keeps eternity before our eyes. It teaches us to judge every choice in light of our final end: union with God.
Wisdom is also practical. It is found in the ordinary decisions of daily life: choosing forgiveness over resentment, truth over convenience, generosity over selfishness, prayer over distraction, and virtue over vice. Wisdom is not reserved for dramatic moments; it is cultivated through countless small acts of fidelity.
This is why the Church encourages us to pray for wisdom. It is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit received in Baptism and strengthened in Confirmation. The gift of wisdom allows us to savor the things of God, to recognize His presence, and to delight in what is eternal rather than becoming consumed by what is passing.
In the end, wisdom is not primarily about having the right answers. It is about knowing the right Person. Jesus Christ is called the Wisdom of God. The closer we grow to Him through prayer, the sacraments, and the study of His word, the wiser we become. True wisdom is found not in mastering life, but in allowing Christ to master our hearts.
May we never be content merely to know more. Instead, let us pray for the grace to become truly wise, seeing all things in the light of God's truth, loving what He loves, and walking each day toward the eternal joy He has prepared for those who seek Him.
