The Month of August: A Time to Persevere in Faith
As summer begins to wind down, the month of August often reminds us that seasons are always changing. Vacations come to an end, families prepare for a new school year, and many of us begin settling back into familiar routines. Amid these transitions, the Church invites us to remain rooted in what never changes: Jesus Christ.
The month of August is dedicated in a special way to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Mary's heart was completely united to the heart of her Son. She listened to God's word, trusted Him even in suffering, and remained faithful at the foot of the Cross. She continues to be a model for every Christian who desires to follow Christ with an undivided heart.
One of the great celebrations of this month is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15.. On this day we rejoice that Mary, having completed her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. Her Assumption reminds us of the destiny God desires for each of us. Heaven is not simply an idea or a distant hope—it is our true home. Mary's glorification gives us confidence that, if we remain faithful to Christ, we too are called to share in the resurrection and eternal life.
August is also a wonderful time to renew our commitment to prayer. Before the busyness of autumn arrives, consider setting aside a few minutes each day to read the Scriptures, pray the Rosary, or spend time with Our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration. Small acts of fidelity, practiced consistently, help us grow in holiness.
As families prepare for another school year, let us remember to pray for our students, teachers, catechists, and all who help pass on the faith to the next generation. Education is not only about growing in knowledge but also in wisdom and virtue.
Finally, let us not forget our Sunday obligation. Summer travel and busy schedules can easily disrupt our routines, but the Eucharist remains the source and summit of our Christian life. Every Sunday, Christ invites us to His altar to receive His grace and be strengthened for the week ahead.
May the Immaculate Heart of Mary lead each of us closer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Through her prayers, may this month of August be a time of renewed faith, hope, and charity for all of us.
Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, pray for us.
In Christ,
Fr. Joe Connelly
