Social Justice Mission: Flip-flops for the Philippines
Guardian Angels Catholic Church is looking to expand its social justice efforts in the mission fields. Pamela Germ recently joined the parish and has agreed to help with this initiative. She is an active member of Risen Savior Missions (RSM), an all-volunteer organization based here in the Twin Cities that does missionary work in the Philippines. RSM feeds Jesus in the distressing disguise of the poor. They begin by partnering with in-country Catholic churches to bring nutritious MannaPack Rice from Feed My Starving Children into poor neighborhoods. Families with children who are severely malnourished are invited to a feeding site for a healthy meal. As these children come more frequently to the feeding site, malnutrition begins to reverse, and families get more involved with the site. Families start attending RSM livelihood classes that focus on proper nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, as well as practical skills in farming and manufacturing. Most importantly, they learn about the love that God has for them.
By the grace of God, RSM has shipped over 151 million meals since 2006. It is truly a “loaves and fishes” story, and you can be a vital part of their mission work. GA is sponsoring a “Flip-Flops for the Philippines” drive by collecting new children's-sized flip-flops for the kids that RSM serves in the Philippines. As they scavenge for food in garbage dumps, small children are walking through broken glass and bacteria-infested areas. We can make a difference for these kids by providing safe footwear. For so many of them, it will be their first pair of new shoes. There is a collection bin for the flip-flops in the Giving Center at GA.
