Missionary Opportunities

Posted by Terry Quinn on

Missionaries of the Poor (M.O.P.) welcomes US citizens to serve as lay volunteers at several of their international care centers. The most popular and well-established overseas missions for immersion and service are Kingston, Jamaica, Nairobi, Kenya, and Cebu City, Philippines.

Top M.O.P. Overseas Missions

  • Kingston, Jamaica: The headquarters and birthplace of M.O.P. Volunteers assist the Brothers in caring for severely disabled children, the homeless, and the abandoned elderly.
  • Nairobi, Kenya: Offers a deeply immersive cultural experience where volunteers work alongside the Brothers to serve marginalized and vulnerable populations in the region.
  • Cebu City, Philippines: A heavily requested mission location featuring a large community where volunteers help in care centers for orphans, the terminally ill, and the elderly.

Volunteer Experience & Requirements

  • Daily Routine: Volunteers share in the monastic community’s daily schedule, which includes morning and evening prayer, the Rosary, and daily Mass.
  • Duties: Tasks are supervised by the Brothers and typically include bathing, feeding, changing, and spending quality time with the residents.
  • Accommodations: Volunteers are usually housed in on-property MOP guest houses.
