All Souls Day: Praying for the Faithful Departed

Posted by Father Joe Connelly on

On Monday, November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day, when we remember and pray for all the faithful departed. This day reminds us of one of the great truths of our Catholic faith: death is not the end of our relationship with those who have died in Christ. We continue to pray for them and entrust them to the mercy of God.

The Church teaches that those who die in God's friendship but are not yet fully purified are being prepared for the glory of Heaven. This is the mystery of Purgatory. Our prayers, sacrifices, and especially the offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass can assist the souls of the faithful departed.

All Souls Day is therefore not simply a day to remember our loved ones with fondness. It is a day to pray for them. We can have Masses offered for the dead, pray the Rosary, offer sacrifices, visit a cemetery, and ask God to bring the souls of our departed brothers and sisters into the fullness of eternal life.

It is also a day to remember our own mortality. The Church places All Saints Day and All Souls Day together for a reason. The saints remind us of the glory for which we were created, while All Souls Day reminds us that we too will one day stand before God. This should not make us afraid, but rather encourage us to live faithfully and to keep our eyes fixed on Christ.

A Special All Souls Day Mass

Please join us at Guardian Angels on Monday, November 2, at 6:00 p.m. for a special All Souls Day Mass as we pray for our deceased family members, friends, and all the faithful departed.

Bring the names of those you love who have died and entrust them to the Lord in prayer. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

In Christ,

Fr. Joe Connelly
