Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving -- Traveling Together Through Lent
Ever heard the phrase, "everything old is new again"? The ancient practice of marking the Lenten season with the trio of prayer, fasting and almsgiving is something that many of us find very familiar. The way I like to look at it is that my almsgiving flows from my prayer and fasting. In my prayer, I ponder the needs of the world around me. In my fasting, I try to make room in my heart for those needs and move toward solidarity with those without enough. In my almsgiving, I give to those causes that can make a difference. For years now (ever since I traveled to Africa with Catholic Relief Services and saw for myself how amazing is the work they do), I have been giving to the CRS Rice Bowl. Parishes all over the country do the same. This year, we will be focusing on the online giving option since so many of us are participating in liturgy at home. (For those of you who are coming to the building, there will be some "real" Rice Bowls on the table in the entryway.) Watch the bulletin and website for weekly updates on the work your tithing will support. Agriculture projects. Water systems. School uniforms. Healthy lunches for kids. Small business loans. The work is comprehensive and is based on the wishes of local communities in over 100 countries. I hope you will make almsgiving with Catholic Relief Services a part of your Lenten journey.
