As we enter the month of August, we remember that this month is devoted to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The history of August being tied to the Immaculate Heart originates during WWII. On May 4, 1944, while Europe was in chaos, Pope Pius XII established the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on August 22. The Holy Father did this to obtain, “peace among nations, freedom for the Church, the conversion of sinners, the love of purity and the practice of virtue.”
After the Second Vatican Council the General Calendar was revised, changing the feast of the Immaculate Heart to be in June. Even though the day was changed many Catholics continue to celebrate August as a month dedicated to the Immaculate Heart.
During this month of August let us also pray that our hearts may grow closer to Christ as our Blessed Mother’s does. Let us also pray for peace in our world, nation, cities, and homes, and for an increase of virtue and a conversion of ourselves and neighbors.
God bless, Fr. Joe
