For youth entering grades 2, 3 and 4 in the fall of 2011:

The Archdiocese has recently required that preparation for First Reconciliation take place during second grade.  Since Guardian Angels has been preparing children at the fifth grade level, we will need to “make up” several grades of children who have not yet received the sacrament.  This year, students in second, third and fourth grade will prepare for First Reconciliation during the fall along with any older children who have not yet received the sacrament.  The preparation for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation will be interwoven with the usual Faith Formation Schedule.  It will include peer learning sessions in classrooms, large group sessions with parents and children together, some large group sessions with parents only (to support parents as the primary educators) as well as some home learning sessions.  Parents will need to be aware of the details of the usual Faith formation Schedule to know which classes and sessions are designed for the preparation for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation.  We will celebrate the Sacramend in early January 2012.

Preparation at Home and at Church

The preparation process includes both activities at church and a program of home study. We expect parents to be fully involved in preparing their children to receive these sacraments. As the bishops of the Second Vatican Council proclaimed, parents are “the first to pass on the faith to their children and to educate them in it,” and they should receive “training, at once many sided and complete” if they are to be “fully effective.”  To support this, we provide a series of parent education sessions as well as parent and child learning experiences.

First Reconciliation Preparation Begins with all Faith Formation classes on October 2 and 5, 2011
